About us
Every month, about one and a half thousand stage-plays are performed throughout Sweden. Out of them, an independent theatre produces one-third. Teatercentrum aims to improve and make visible this independent one-third as well as the diversity it embodies.
Teatercentrum is a national non-profit interest organization and network representing independent theatre in Sweden. Our members are professional theatres, producers and artists working on their own commission, without external political or commercial claims. To put it simply: If a professional theatre is not owned or controlled by an outside part - then it is an independent theatre and likely to be a member in Teatercentrum.
One of Teatercentrum’s main activities are cultural politics, i.e. improving the financial, organizational and artistic situation for the independent theatre as well as promoting artistic diversity, quality and autonomy in the field of stage art. But we also aim to provide our members with venues and instruments for further education, networking, marketing and artistic development.
Alongside with the national secretariat located in Stockholm, four regional secretariats have been launched for a period of six years, starting with Gothenburg in 2001. Later, Stockholm, Malmö and most recently Umeå followed, making Teatercentrum a truly nationwide organization. Teatercentrum organize about 70 theatres from all over the country. In 2009 we are celebrating our 40th anniversary.
