Friteatern is one of Sweden’s oldest independent, professional drama groups. We seek out our audiences in classrooms, village halls, theatres, workplaces and at meetings organized by societies and associations all over the country.

It is our aim to enact stories that our audiences can relate to, and we work “in the field” in every sense of the term. We try to maintain a personal, close relationship with the audience; we like to get to know them and share experiences with them. We like them to become involved in what happens on stage instead of just being consumers of drama. Together with playwrights and authors, we produce new plays that engage with the society in which we live.

Friteatern runs Teater Bristol in Sundbyberg, near Stockholm, which is also our guest performance venue.
